How Long Does It Take to Become an LVN in California?
(And How Dalrada Career Institute Can Help You Get There Fast)
If you’re ready to start or level up your healthcare career—but not ready to spend four years in college—becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) could be the fastest route to start.
But how long does it really take to become an LVN in California? At Dalrada Career Institute (DCI) in San Diego, it’s Just 13 months.
Here’s what that journey looks like—and how we help every step of the way.
Step 1: Complete an Approved VN Program (13 Months at DCI)
To qualify for VN licensure in California, you must complete a Board-approved training program. At DCI, our full-time Vocational Nursing Program includes:
- 576 hours of classroom instruction
- 954 hours of hands-on clinical training in San Diego healthcare settings
- Total: 1,530 hours of focused, career-ready education
Program Length: 13 months Full Time
This is designed to get you trained and ready to work in the field with confidence.
Step 2: Apply for Licensure Through the State of California
After graduation, DCI guides students through the licensure process with the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), which operates under the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).
This includes:
- Submitting your US High School Official transcripts or Equivalency
- Completing background checks and drug screening
- Paying the required state fees
- Registering for the NCLEX-PN exam
DCI’s support team assists with application submissions and timelines to help you stay on track.
Step 3: Pass the NCLEX-PN and Receive Your License
The final step is passing the NCLEX-PN exam, which qualifies you for your official VN license. DCI students are thoroughly prepared, with NCLEX-PN pass rates aligned with California state averages. Some graduates have even received their licenses within 20 days of program completion.
Licensure Timeframe: Typically 4 to 8 weeks after graduation, depending on exam scheduling and processing times.
